Shady Rest

What an amazing spot! Jan was an absolutely lovely host, makes the best poached eggs from the chickens next door for breaky! The house is so cozy, with comfortable beds, great shower and a wood fire in the main room. Will definitely stay again if we’re back in town.

Had an awesome overnight stay. The rooms are really clean and comfortable and the place oozes character. Very handy being just 5 mins walk from the centre of Takaka. Had a perfect breakfast to set us up for an action packed day. Mark and the rest of the staff are super friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

This place is a hidden gem if ever there was one. Mark the owner is so accommodating, friendly and welcoming, he sorted us out with a beautiful room with spa bath and French doors which was a 30 second walk down to a big pond where I fed the eels. What I really liked about this place was the friendliness, cleanliness and the breakfast - which was epic. They had laid out amazing fresh fruits, Greek yoghurt, cereals and Mark will actually make you eggs on toast to your liking - the poached egg was perfect and even better than what you’d find in a cafe. The house has some super interesting art work and everywhere you turn there is something that takes your interest. There is loads of off street parking and it is just a really lovely place to stay. It was really clean and the old world charm here is wonderful. Thanks Mark and the crew - if we pass through this way again we’ll definitely stay.

Best breakfast on our trip so far. Nicest host, lovely historic house with plenty of shared space - garden, kitchen can be used by all guests and even the home brewed beer on tap is for free. You can't find a better place to explore Golden Bay and Abel Tasman, or to get inspired :)
